When it comes to our brains, we tend to favor our analytical, detail-oriented left hemisphere. But strengthening the creative right side of our brains is equally important for innovation, self-expression and whole-brain thinking. Luckily, there are plenty of activities that give your right brain a solid mental workout. Here are five “creative calisthenics” you can try to flex your imagination and become a more well-rounded thinker.

Free Writing

Writing from your creative rather than critical faculties requires silencing that inner judge. Set a timer for 10 minutes and write continuously about anything at all without stopping. Avoid editing or questioning your word choices. The goal is to tap into unfiltered ideas and expressions your rational mind would normally filter out. This exercise loosens up mental blocks and lets original thoughts flow. Doing free association writing where you allow one word to spur the next without censorship is another right brain exercise that opens up creative expression.
